mumbai dabbawallahs Vs bangalore autowallahs...
we have been hearing a lot about the dabbawallahs ofmumbai (it seems it maintains six sigma standards) fortheir efficiency, accuracy, timeliness and customersatisfaction.. let us look at the other side of it
my friend kalyan recently collected somestatistics abt blore autos after his great experienceswith these fellows.. 80 percent of the autos u findwill be busy...12 percent of them they will find outwhere u should go but will never come... kalyan'sinterpretation is that they r employed by the autounions just to find out the statistics of the ppltravelling in the city, timings and other details..they r not meant for carrying passengers.. their fueland living expenses r taken care by the auto unions...
now abt the rest.. the fellow might reject u on thefollwing grounds
- the place, u have to go, is out of city limits
- the place is out of his area of interest
- there might be a traffic problem on the way
- he just doesn't feel like coming (most likelyreason)
-other reasons like its too hot, too cold orraining
- we also guessed other reasons like they rsuffering from income tax problems and dont want toadd to their problems
once he decides that he will take u, then he willtell whether u have to pay 1.5 or 2 times or 20 rupeesextraa on meter as, he feels, is fair
this is written after our yesterday's experience..we walked 2 kms and got rejected by 25 free autosbefore deciding to settle for an icecream.. in betweenan auto came and dropped someone and he agreed to pickus.. we ran with icecreams in our hands (here is apattern ..there is a good chance that the fellow willpick u if he just dropped someone..)
